On Friday May the 13th, 2011, I spoke at the Ravinia Club in Atlanta on” Leading Edge Job Search Strategies”. The #1 Job Search Strategy is to be aware of industry employment trends. National employment trends in April as reported on CNN and Indeed reported over 34% plus increases from April of last year in Transporation, Manufacturing, Media, IT, Healthcare, Construction and Accounting. Deeper research revealed that state by state employment trends do not always track with national employment trends. So how do you find the industries in your state that are hiring?

Yesterday, I spoke with a client from Boston who is looking for a VP Finance, CFO position. The numbers of announced openings were slim, actually, under 600 positions for the greater Boston area. (I found this by researching Indeed.com.) By studying for and taking the CPA Exam she will greatly increase her chance of being hired. There are an additional 1353 open positions requiring or desiring a CPA designation. Indeed.com is a great tool to determine industries and position titles that are hiring in your state.
If you have been in the job search too long it could be that you are fishing where there or no fish and you need to fish in a larger pond. This means you might need to gain additional credentials to qualify for more openings.

Another leading edge job search strategy is to make sure that all of your promotional materials stand out from the crowd. These would be your business card, your text-only resume, your resume portfolio, your linkedin profile. With the current standard of often 2.5 people per job opening…I’ve never seen the 1/2 person… you have to up your game to be employed.
