Intangible Factors That Positively Influence Decision Makers
A current career client questioned my decision to deliver a portfolio package containing his resume, curriculum vitae, references, writing samples, etc. “Why bother he asked?” I answered, “Delivering a tasteful and complete career package makes you positively standout from the crowd. The old adage is true. An employer is looking to see if you can do the work, if you will, and if they can stand you while you do it. A complete resume package shows that you care enough about the employer to make a special effort to send your best. This tactile and visual presentation appeals to those learning styles. Plus if you or your representative personally delivers the package you have the added advantage of auditory information added to the package. You may even get an opportunity to have a short conversation with the employer. Plus, you have found the campus building where you will be interviewed! Very good!”
How do you know who should receive the package? In one recent case the name was listed online with the application. In a second case, I looked for the HR person in charge of employment whose name was found on an organization chart on the organization’s website. A phone call should also provide the correct name. Just a little extra effort can move you to the head of the pack of applicants. Happy Hunting!
